Obituary of Juanita Merrell

 

Palmer, Tennessee - Juanita Merrell passed away on April 11, 2023. She was born July 29, 1935, to the late Margaret (Lady Bug) and Albert Merrell of Palmer, TN. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alyene Hall. Juanita retired from teaching at Kirkman Technical High School in Chattanooga, TN where she was also known as a legendary volleyball coach. Her later years were spent golfing, hiking, riding her bike, and supporting the Lady Vols basketball and softball teams.

Family always came first to Juanita. At the age of 27 she moved in with her sister, Alyene, to help raise five children.  Juanita is survived by all five children Connie Peterson (Dan), Walter Hall (Suzy), and Janice Hodge (David) of Chattanooga and Carol Hall and Tina Hall of Murfreesboro, TN as well as Doris Wiggins (Bobby and Kim), many grand nephews and nieces, two God children, friends, cousins, and her family of Kirkman Hawkettes. Juanita, while known for her sense of humor, was loving and generous and will be missed by many.

A visitation with family and friends will be held Saturday April 15, 2023, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM CDT at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee.

A private graveside service will be held at the Browns Chapel Cemetery.

A Celebration of life will be held later in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital are welcomed.
