Mary Elizabeth Carter

Beth Carter of Altamont, Tennessee, passed away on October 4, 2020, at the age of 81.  She was born Mary Elizabeth Gober to Alfred and Alice Gober, on July 10, 1939 in Belcher, Kentucky.

Beth attended Laurelbrook Academy in Dayton, Tennessee and graduated from Little Creek Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1957.  She went on to attend Madison College just outside of Nashville, where she received a degree in Nursing (1961) and Anesthesia (1962).

She was married to C.D. Carter in 1970 and is survived by her husband and three children, Greg Carter of Centerville, Ohio, Keith Carter of Kamloops, British Columbia and Rita Plunkett of Selmer, Tennessee.  She is also survived by her brother, James Edward (Eddy) Gober and numerous grand children and great grand children.

It is impossible to capture her essence in writing but, chances are, if you met Beth, you were not likely to forget her.  She was larger than life and always in motion.  She never backed down from a challenge and loved adventure.  Her love for people and her desire for them to know about Jesus took her all over the world.  Beth and C.D. spent 6 years as missionaries in Belize, Central America and they continued to build churches all over Central and South America for almost 30 years.  Beth loved working with young people and stayed young by being active.  She rock climbed into her 70s and marked her 80^th year by paragliding and waterskiing. If you wanted to be where the action was, all you had to do was follow Beth.

Hardworking and generous, Beth would help anyone, anywhere, anytime.  She was the epitome of the Golden Rule.  She loved God with all her heart and her neighbor as herself. 

Without her mischievous smile and infectious enthusiasm, the world seems suddenly “still” and a little too quiet without her.  But take heart.  She may be done with this life, but she would invite you to lace up your hiking shoes and go adventuring with her in the next.
