Obituary of Joseph Lee Scruggs

Nashville, Tennessee – Mr. Joseph Lee Scruggs, 90, passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at the Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.  He was born second of 7 children in Palmer, Tennessee on June 17, 1931, to Frank Scruggs and Ophelia Holt Scruggs who preceded him in death along with his sisters, Elizabeth Ann Holt and Nancy Bastle; brothers, Frank Gerald and Charles Scruggs.

He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired after 35 years as an Engineer with Bell South Telephone. He coached little league baseball and football.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce Grooms Scruggs; sons, Russell (Connie) and Tim (Sheila) Scruggs; grandsons, Andrew and Ryan Scruggs; great grandson, Benjamin Scruggs; brother, Jack (Linda) Scruggs; sister, Sandra Haynes; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Wavell Stewart and Bill Watkins officiating with burial to follow in the Fall Creek Cemetery with Military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.

Visitation: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Saturday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee.
