James Rogers Jr.

Obituary of James Alvin Rogers Jr.

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Coalmont, Tennessee – James Rogers was born March 8th, 1957 in Royal Oak, Michigan, and went to join his parents in heaven on November 2nd, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Whether you knew him as James, Jimmy, JR, Little Jim, or Dad, you knew that this man was too big and too great for words. He was a captivating storyteller, generous beyond his means, and had a sense of humor that could bring you to tears. He was always looking for the next business venture, from his pawnshop to his towing company and ultimately his restaurant. He did not start college until he was in his early forties, but despite that, and his dyslexia, he still received his Master’s Degree in Social Work. He later became the Director of Disability Services and Coordinator of Student Success for GateWay Community College where he spent six years doing work he was proud of. He “retired”, opening Sam’s Corner restaurant in the town that he cherished, doing what he loved.

He is preceded in death by his father James Rogers and mother Eileen Rogers, daughter Summer, grandson Lincoln, nephew Christopher and brother in law David Taube.

He is survived by his wife Ellen, children James Rogers and wife Corryn, with granddaughters Eleanor and Jordyn and grandson Jude; Damaris (Rogers) Hipps and husband Ian, with granddaughter Bethany; Cameron Rockefeller; Robert Justin (RJ) King; Charese Borgerson, with granddaughter Cora; Ashley Rogers; Lindsay (Rogers) Renoth and husband Dustin, with granddaughter Everly; Kelly Rogers; and Lauren Borgerson. He is also survived by his sisters Patricia Taube, Pamela McBrien and husband John, and brother Timmy. These names only begin to touch on the family and loved ones who celebrate his life and mourn his departure. All who loved him dearly will remember him for his way with words and people, his music and his sacrificial care of those he loved.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers, Daniel Crabtree and John Potts officiating with burial to follow in the Coalmont Cemetery.

Visitation: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Friday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee.
