Like everyone else, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ralph's unexpected passing. Grundy County is a better place because of the many civic activities he was involved in over the years. In his retirement, Ralph was a mainstay at the Grundy County Historical Society where he had a wide circle of friends. We always exchanged Christmas cards, and his absence will be felt as the holidays approach. My sincere sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

Ralph was a freind, supporter and co worker at the Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company Library at the Grundy Co. Heritage Center in Tracy. It was his Friday work. If we were in need of something, he would provide it. Recently we needed a rolling cart repaired. Ralph took it home, repaired it, and brought it back in good shape. He just last week brought us photos of the construction of the new Grundy County High School and pictures of Altamont from by-gone times. He always had photos of his girls - his daughters and grandchildren to share with us.
He loved eating lunch with all the workers and visitors who were at the library at lunch time. We'd order from the Annex, which was next door. His loved their hamburgers, and when pickled beets were on the menu, he choose a meat and 3 which had to include pickled beets. He loved days when we had pizza too and would always remind us that his doctor said that he should lose 20 lbs. Ralph said that the doctor should have figured it out over the years that he had no intention of losing 20 lbs. because he liked to eat too well.
We enjoyed Ralph's company, advice, and help. We will miss him terribly because he was part of our little volunteer working family at the library and because he was a good man.

My Dear Ralph. I've only known you 6 or so months at the Heritage Center but you were a bright light. I was super glad to meet such a nice fella who loves to family sleuth.
I'm hopeful your family finds comfort in knowing you were so appreciated by so many that weren't related.
Friday's will never be the same.
I'm sending a Jan hug.

I did not know Mr Rieben personally, but always enjoyed seeing him in the July 4th Parade in Altamont when visiting my parents. I send my prayers and condolences for the family.

Fridays at the Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company Library will never be the same. Ralph came every week and brought cheese and crackers to share. He also shared himself. He enjoyed conversation and always asked about our family members. He was a good man and those are hard to come by. We will miss him greatly. Godspeed, friend.
