Palmer, Tennessee – Mrs. Nellie Catherine Grooms, 82, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.  She was born in Palmer, Tennessee on September 1, 1940, to George Overturf and Mary Stocker Overturf who preceded her in death along with her husband, Elbert Ronald “Lad” Grooms.

She is survived by her daughter, Rejetta Sellers; son-in-law, David Sellers; grandson, Andregg Sellers and granddaughter, Wrenn Sellers. Her two grandchildren were her pride and joy. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was known for her dry humor and quick wit. Her humor sometimes caught you off guard, but it left everyone with a smile and a lift in their step. She often joked with people she met while shopping or eating out.

Nellie lived a long and full life. She shared those years with so many people and never lacked good friends and close family. Some of those who were especially close in the last years of her life were:

Her “Shopping Buddy” sister-in-law, Peggy Payne, who was a great friend and witness to many of those moments when Nellie was joking with someone she just met.

Her “Pen Pal” cousin, Betty Delius, who supported her in countless ways with her daily email contact.

Her neighbor, Deedra Tate, who was like a second daughter and spent many days and nights like part of the family.

All of her close friends at Collins Church of Christ.

She loved to lend her voice to the Alto part on any church hymn. She enjoyed preparing food for church fellowships, family, and any other eager eaters. Her food was always a treat.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers, Willie Childers and David Van Horn officiating with burial to follow in Fall Creek Cemetery.

Visitation: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Tuesday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee.
