Obituary of Geneva Hancock
Palmer, Tennessee – Mrs. Opal Geneva Cordell Smith Hancock, 90, formally of Crossville, passed away Wednesday July 19, 2023, at the Riverbend Assisted Living Facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She was born on March 26, 1933, in the Tarlton Valley of Grundy County, Tennessee, to John and Nellie Dykes Cordell who preceded her in death along with her sisters, Johnnie Ruth Cordell Hampton and Helen Delane Cordell Summers; husbands, Glen W. Smith and Edgar E. Hancock.
She was a member of the Living Church of God.
She is survived by her sons, Glynn Steven (Debra) Smith, Paul Clifton Smith and Mark Cordell (Bob Andrews) Smith; daughters, Jennifer Delane Swanson and Leslie Ruth (Tom) Boles; brothers, Clifford and Jim Cordell; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Her faith and convictions were foremost in her life. She was a seeker of knowledge with an avid love for reading, traveling, and gardening. She loved music and dancing. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was an excellent homemaker for many years. After raising 5 Children, she attended Roane State Community College, where she studied for a degree as a Nutritionist, always making the Dean's List and a member of the National Honors Society. She drove a bus for the Spring City School System and was employed by the Rhea and Sequatchie Counties. She also worked at the Rockwood City Library.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 22 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Layne Funeral Home Palmer with services to be held 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow in the Browns Chapel Cemetery.
