Obituary of Kenny Payne

Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee – Mr. James Kenneth “Kenny” Payne, 81, passed away Tuesday August 8, 2023, at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

He was born in Palmer, Tennessee on November 10, 1941, to Buddy and Lucy Green Payne who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Herschel and Carl Bailey Payne.

He was a member of the Collins Church of Christ and has operated several businesses in Grundy County over the years including the Paynes Service Station, The Swiss Stop and Go and a game room.

He is survived by sons, Barry (Greta) Payne and Rusty Payne; mother of his children, Peggy Payne; brother, Charles Payne; sisters, Jewell Wells and Rachel Burnett; grandchildren, Drake (Cilla) Payne and Breigh (Colby) Rymer; great grandchildren, Rowan, Cree, Prue and Bash; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Philip Fults officiating with burial to follow in the Fall Creek Cemetery.

Visitation: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM Thursday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee.
