Coalmont – Mrs. Gladys Smartt Short, 102, died, Sunday February 5, 2017 at the Willows Nursing Home in Winchester. She was born in Coalmont, Tennessee on July 4, 1914 to John the Baptist Smartt and Mary Estella Sanders Smartt who preceded her in death along with her husband, George "Sug" Short; son, Jimmy Tarlton Short; brothers, Henry, Elijah “Farris”, Earnest “Fox”, Thomas Winford “Pete” and Louie Rudoplh “Luke” Smartt; sisters, Lillie Bethalee Smartt, Maggie Myrtle Meeks, Dollie Nunley, Grace Crabtree and Ida Mae Short; granddaughter, Penelope Maxine Nunley; great grandson, Allen Lawson.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty “Tarp” (Late Max) Nunley; grandchildren, Patty Nunley, Peggy (Larry) Stanford, Paula Kate (Barry) Braden, Penny (Junior) Dove, Karen (Henry) Melton and Candace (Jerry) Bone; great grandchildren, Jared Nunley, Roxanne Melton, Macon Dove, Nicole Dixon, Brandon Dove, Lindsey Westerfield, Dakota Bone and Bricen Bone; 13 great great grandchildren. A host of nieces and nephews; special caregiver, Amy Byers.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Joe Nunley officiating with burial to follow in the Coalmont Cemetery. Visitation: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM Wednesday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee. www.laynefuneralhome.com
