Rest in peace, Shelby. I will always hold fond memories of you in my heart. The Veterans Day celebration at Grundy County High School in 2014 was one of the happiest days of my life. You, Kaitlin Sons, and Halie Monroe won the 10th annual Bill & Mendia Patton Patriotic Award. Your outstanding essay featured remembrances of attending the military funeral of your grandfather, Sam Comer. After the celebration we gathered for a photo and were joined by director of schools Dr. David Dickerson and English teacher Beth Brown.
The next year when I wrote a history of this award, I had that photo on the front cover. I am so glad I did.
