Aunt Joyce was a huge blessing to have in my life. She was candid, stubborn, and always quick to laugh (at least when she was around our family). I could make a very, very long list of all the amazing things about my Aunt Joyce, but for now I will just say that I am so glad I had the chance to get to know her. She played a pivotal role in my growth as a human being and she will be greatly missed.

One of my memories of Aunt Joyce involved a trip to her home in Holland, Mi. Aunt Shawn, my sister Shari, and I were laughing uncontrollably at the dinner table, she asked us to stop but it wasn't working. Aunt Joyce was pretty "no nonsense", and someone was sent to the other room. Unfortunately, we could still hear each other through the walls. I can still see her rolling her eyes at us!
As Cassie shared, Aunt Joyce was an independent woman, which is a quality I admired in her. Our family was very happy for her, when she met married long-time friend Bob Evans and my parents hosted their wedding reception in Grand Ledge, MI. The picture of Shawn and Joyce was taken on that day. Uncle Bobby and Aunt Joyce fostered children with firm, loving-kindness, another good example of parenting I learned from. My own children will attest that I may have learned too well!
I also sent a picture of "all the nieces and nephews" Aunt Joyce is "survived by", taken at Aunt Shawn's wedding. I'm sure there are many stories they could share of Aunt Joyce, because no matter how far away she lived, she frequently made it back to Michigan for holidays and other events. Sadly, I never visited her on her beloved mountain or met the loving community of people she spoke of, but I know it is beautiful because it held her there. Now, she is in an even more beautiful place than we can imagine, and I'm so happy for her.

Joyce visited Munith every summer for the past several years. She was such fun to spend time with, had a wonderful sense of humor. I will miss visiting with her. She was an incredibly wonderful woman. She loved George's cooking, and even was brave enough to come to our loud, fun family dinners each Sunday. I loved having her come to our church every Sunday. I always made sure we sang "It Is Well With My Soul" either as a congregational hymn or our choir as an anthem. She was a Christian in every sense of the word. She will be missed by many and was very special to all of us.

My relationship with Aunt Joyce truly blossomed when I was 16 years old and we visited her and Uncle Bobby in Tennessee, just a few short months before his passing. From then on, she was a regular visitor to our household, and my grandmother in all the ways that matter. She was precious and dear to my family, and I don’t know how you truly move forward with this kind of loss. She would have pish-poshed the idea that she was so important, but her impact will have lasting effects on the rest of my life.
Aunt Joyce was quite possibly one of the most stubborn women I’ve ever known. Which is one of the reasons she was able to forge on in seasons of grief and loneliness and grow during the seasons of love and joy. Her faith was challenged in ways that many of us could never dream of, and yet she prayed on, hoped on, and loved on. Her strength and desire to serve made her an admirable example for young men and women to look up to, as I certainly did.
My Aunt Joyce was fiercely independent, but not aloof. She gave all the love she could to everyone she met, and that love included a stark honesty that we so rarely get the privilege of experiencing now. Her honesty wasn’t always painless, but it was always given with the hope to nurture better things, whether that was to improve a behavior or promote growth as an individual.
I don’t know the true number of kids that she fostered, but I do know that she showered all of them with love, affection, and direction when they were with her. Informally, she adopted my siblings and myself as her grandchildren, showering us with attention and love, and being present during the most important events of our lives. Even as far away as she was most of the year, Aunt Joyce was always present for us.
Aunt Joyce was an uncommonly good mother, aunt, sister, and grandmother. She was strong, intelligent, funny, and talented. She was and is so loved, and will be missed by each of us who knew her.
