Obituary of Thomas Carroll Rollins

Nurseryman, Friend, and WWII Veteran Thomas Rollins Passes Away Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Thomas Carroll Rollins, 97, of Altamont, Tennessee, passed away Sunday.  Thomas was the owner of Thomas Rollins Nursery and was a member of the Sweeton Hill Congregational Methodist Church having taught Sunday School for many years.

Thomas was a WWII veteran having served in the Army’s 2nd Infantry (Artillery) 28th Division.  The 28th Division served in the Battle of the Bulge in Luxemburg.  He was awarded and recognized numerous times by several community, state and local organizations, and selected by many groups and schools as a speaker.  The book Million Dollar Turtles was dedicated in his honor and a grandchild, several family members, and many other children have been named in his honor.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Fannie (Myers) Rollins and siblings Marcus Rollins, Leda Mae (Bugg) Crisp, Willie Disheroon, Lily Roberts, Paul Rollins, and Adolphus Rollins.  Surviving siblings include John Rollins and Rachel Johnson of Altamont.  He is also survived by his wife of 74 years Mary of Altamont, daughter Brenda (Carson) Carlock of Ringgold, Georgia, son Wayne (Vel) Rollins of Murfreesboro, two grandsons Shayne Rollins of Bristol and Seth Rollins of Murfreesboro, and two great granddaughters Primrose and Lilly of Bristol.

Thomas is also survived by a host of living family and friends.  Sincere thanks to all who have helped during his illness and special thanks to Corey Matheson for his devoted friendship and caregiving.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday April 26, 2023, in the funeral home chapel with family officiating with burial to follow in the Altamont Cemetery.

Military Honors will be presented by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.

Visitation: 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM Tuesday and 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Wednesday at Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, Tennessee.
